Morning blues

I have been wanting to write down a recipe for another blue spirulina breakfast bowl for a while already in addition to my first one with banana, plums and white/green currants. I really like that first recipe as well but since neither green and white currants nor plums are in season anymore and I didn’t freeze any (silly me), there is no way to make it during wintertime. What was good with the plums and especially the currants was that they cover the spirulina taste completely. If you have ever tasted spirulina alone you know what I’m talking about. Why I still use spirulina despite the not-the-most-wonderful taste is because of it’s impressive nutritional content: spirulina contains a lot of protein and vitamins, especially vitamin B and betacarotene + minerals such as phosphor, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc and manganese. Moreover, it gives you that much needed morning energy kick.

Luckily, I have now came up with a new super tasty combo that covers the spirulina taste completely and makes a perfect year-around blue breakfast bowl with all the spirulina benefits: banana, apple and kiwifruit with spirulina and yogurt.

Crispy blue brekky bowl (Banana-Apple-Kiwi-Spirulina)

What you will need:

1 big banana

1dl frozen apple chunks (around half of a medium sweet/tart apple)

1 frozen kiwi

1,5dl natural (organic) yogurt (or unflavoured dairy free yogurt)

1tsp spirulina powder

How to do it?

  • The night before (or earlier), chop your apple and kiwi and freeze them overnight. You don’t need to peel them but remove the hard parts.
  • In the morning, simply process all your ingredients in your smoothie machine or with a stick blender until smooth. You can leave some banana for toppings/decoration.
  • Top with more berries, muesli, seeds or whatever you like and enjoy!
